How is teacher tenure harmful to the school system and what are bad effects teacher tenure has on schools?

Teacher tenure, due process employment, basically offers teachers a guarantee that they cannot be fired for no good reason. This basically means that teachers in general, who have disagreements with their administrators, cannot summarily be laid off without any cause.

  1. How do you get rid of bad teachers? What happens if your enrollment declines or you want to add teachers with expertise in a different area?
  2. Where do I begin? Teacher tenure began as a great concept for protecting those who work hard and have dedicated themselves to educating young minds. Unfortunately, it has grown to this over- reaching big brother mechanism that keeps poor, disgruntled teachers that are stuck in old habits and ways, inside of the most damaging positions- teaching! Schools and students thrive the most when both are working at their greatest potential for the same goals and purposes. However, I have found that more and more tenured teachers are only in school for a pay check and are simply not being effective with students. They do not buy into new idea of teaching, and thus, kids suffer. Also, they often complain about everything, and the school suffers. I think there needs to be a better system of checks and balances for Teacher Tenure to be productive and effective. This current system simply doesn't work!
  3. You mean they can't be laid off with ANY cause. There are SO MANY bad teachers and they are this way because they KNOW tehy can't be fired. So many teachers hurting children in the classroom.
